Post Extraction Emergencies

Urgent Appointments at Autograph Dental Cambridge

Following a tooth extraction, complications are rare, but some situations may require urgent attention. Here’s a list of potential reasons for an urgent appointment, along with steps to take if they occur.

Persistent or Severe Pain

If pain continues beyond 3-5 days or becomes increasingly intense, it could indicate a condition like alveolar osteitis “dry socket”.

What to Do:

  • Continue to take pain medication as directed.
  • Avoid smoking, as it can slow healing and increase the risk of dry socket.
  • Contact us immediately if pain worsens, despite medication.

Excessive Bleeding

  • A little bleeding is normal after extraction, but it should gradually subside. If bleeding becomes heavy or doesn’t stop after several hours, you may need attention.

    What to Do:

    • Bite down on a piece of clean gauze for 20-30 minutes.
    • Sit upright and avoid strenuous activities.
    • If bleeding persists, reach out to us promptly for guidance.

Swelling and Infection

Swelling is common after a surgical extraction, but if it becomes severe, or if you notice signs of infection like fever or foul-tasting discharge, an appointment may be necessary.

What to Do:

  • Apply a cold compress to the cheek for 10-15 minutes at a time to help reduce swelling.
  • Keep the area clean, following your post-operative care instructions.
  • Call us if swelling increases, or if you develop fever or unusual symptoms.

Allergic Reactions or Medication Concerns

  • If you experience any adverse reactions to prescribed medication, such as itching, rash, or breathing difficulty, seek help immediately.

    What to Do:

    • Stop taking the medication and contact us for an alternative.
    • For serious symptoms like difficulty breathing, seek emergency medical attention.

Your comfort and healing are our priorities. Please don’t hesitate to contact us for any questions or if you need an urgent appointment.
